Summer Weekend Idea : Schedule a beauty consultation

Lately, my interest in makeup has increased along with my desire to recreate looks I’ve seen on Youtube or Instagram. Whether it be contouring, pigmented eyes, highlight or just an overall full coverage look, I’ve practiced and practiced but have had a hard time replicating certain looks; partially because of technique and lack of proper products. I made several attempts to teach certain makeup tricks to myself, but ultimately I needed the help of a professional. I’ve had my makeup done a few times at the counter and by independent makeup artist but my needs and desires have since changed. I’m a bit embarrassed to say but although I own at least 7 or 8 Mac products, the majority of my makeup is purchased from CVS.

I believe in seeking professional help just as much as I think in some cases…”Doing It Yourself” can be just as effective. I certainly wouldn’t try to be an electrician or do the work of a mechanic, however, I may skip on a restaurant meal and prepare dinner at home. My makeup is no different. Wouldn’t we all enjoy the luxury of having an in-house makeup artist and hair professional at our daily rescue? Fortunately or unfortunately, that is just not my reality.

Like most women I enjoy wearing makeup. I don’t wear a full face of makeup as much as I would like, primarily because I am still learning proper techniques and application. I can’t begin to tell you how many Youtube videos I’ve watched to learn how to get the perfect brow, the Kim Kardashian highlight or simply to watch how others apply their makeup. Based on recommendations, I’ve ran to the store and purchased product after product – some worked and some didn’t. Luckily, I’m addicted to couponing, so a lot of the drugstore bought products were free or purchased with a heavy discount.
Beauty Collage I decided that I needed a change. First I needed someone to show me the proper techniques to achieve my desired looks and then I need to purchase a few quality products.

During a recent business trip to Charleston, West Virginia with my boyfriend, I made a pit stop into the local Sephora. Might I add, the mall was surprisingly large with great shops. I’m not a frequent shopper of Sephora and have actually only made one purchase from the national retail chain (and that was a Sephora brand flat iron that is an absolute must-have). I recruited the assistance of Sephora cast member Marcus to help me not only find the perfect concealer and foundation but to also teach me the technique to apply to achieving the perfect highlight effect.

After testing a few products, he paired me with a NARS creamy concealer and a COVER FX Natural Finish Oil-Free Foundation. My face wasn’t primed or really moisturized but I was only there to learn technique not for a makeover. I must admit, I love the highlight look and I can’t wait to sit at my makeup vanity and try it myself. I ended up purchasing both products along with a Sephora brand dual concealer and foundation brush.

NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer – $28
Sephora Brand Flawless Complexion Dual Foundation/Concealer Brush: Normally $28; On sale $11

This was certainly an unexpected splurge ($84) and one that makes you second think your purchase – but if it helps me achieve my desired look. I think it was worth it!

Even if you aren’t interested in making a big purchase, head over to a cosmetic store, beauty counter or professional makeup artist and learn new technique, find your perfect shade and get to know your skin and face a bit better!

Next week, Marcus will share 5 Amazing Beauty Tips that applies to every woman!
